Creating Healthy People, Healthy Ecosystems
The theme for camp this week was all about Healthy People and Healthy Ecosystems! Campers explored their community and why it is important to protect ecosystems.
Monday Word of the Day: Ecosystem (noun): A community of interacting living things and their environment. Campers got a chance to explore the history of their community by taking a field trip to explore Concrete. Campers learned about Community Action and the Chamber of Commerce and their roles in the community, and then walked to the Concrete Museum where they learned about Concrete's history. When our museum tour was finished, we walked to 5b's Bakery so campers could give their thank you cards for the delicious breakfasts, lunches, and snacks that was donated by 5b's on Thursdays. Campers also got a cookie while at the bakery. We finished the day by walking to the Community Garden for a banana snack and a chance to play Rock, Paper, Scissors, Baseball. Tuesday Word of the Day: Healthy (Adjective): having good health, not sick or injured. Ranger Tyler started the day off by reading a book about the Northwest Alphabet and got campers thinking about what they might create for the Concrete Summer Learning Alphabet. After literacy activities in the computer lab and the reading room, campers learned how to make coleslaw, and created the alphabet of Concrete Summer Learning Adventure. Wednesday Word of the Day: Reflection (Noun): serious thought or consideration. Today was Family Fun Day at camp! After morning literacy activities, campers got a chance to finish their alphabet illustrations and personalize a picture frame with a camp picture to remember the times spent at Concrete Summer Learning Adventure. Campers and their visiting families then observed the plants that campers planted on the first day of camp, play the animal spelling relay game, picked up their tie-dye pillow cases and got two free books from Page Ahead! Campers and families then ate a delicious barbeque lunch, including the coleslaw that campers made the day before and watched the Concrete Summer Learning Adventure 2014 video. After lunch, everyone enjoyed blueberry milkshakes earned by campers for completing the Read-O-Meter goal of reading over 5000 minutes as a group! All campers were awarded participation certificates and trophies in the campers of the week ceremony Thursday Word of the Day: Stewardship (Noun): The careful and responsible management of something entrusted to ones care. Campers arrived off the bus at Marblemount Ranger Station, eager for their last day of camp! After a delicious breakfast of 5b's granola and blueberries, donated from Cascadian Farms, campers took a 5-senses nature walk on the Cow Heaven trail, helped with planting native plants at the plant nursery, and created lanyard key chains with yellow, green, or purple cord. Campers then took their Junior Ranger oaths and were awarded their wilderness patch in the Junior Ranger Ceremony before enjoying a delicious pizza lunch from 5b's. After lunch, campers loaded on the busses and waved goodbye as they rode home from the last day of their adventurous summer with Concrete Summer Learning Adventure. |
